Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming the construction industry. From quantity take-offs and cost estimates to programme analysis and contract administration, AI is becoming an integral part of how projects are delivered. But while AI can generate answers in seconds, it cannot replace professional judgement, commercial reasoning, or accountability.

This webinar explored one of the most important questions facing today's construction professionals: How do we work with AI without losing control of our professional responsibilities?

Designed for Quantity Surveyors, Commercial Managers, Project Managers, Engineers, BIM professionals and other construction practitioners, this session examined the opportunities AI presents, while highlighting the risks of relying on AI-generated outputs without appropriate oversight.

Participants learnt why different AI systems can produce different answers from the same information, how to critically evaluate AI- generated outputs, and why governance, validation and commercial reasoning remain essential professional skills.

The webinar also explored the legal, contractual and ethical responsibilities that continue to rest with the professional—even when AI is involved in the decision-making process.

Rather than focusing on software demonstrations or specific AI tools, this webinar introduced a practical framework for thinking critically about AI, enabling professionals to make informed decisions, reduce commercial risk and protect themselves and their organisations.

Pieter de Bruyn is the Founder and Managing Director of Tekton Thrive, an organisation dedicated to advancing the construction profession through education, digital transformation and the responsible adoption of Artificial Intelligence.

With more than 20 years of international experience in quantity surveying, commercial management and construction, Pieter has worked across major building and infrastructure projects throughout Africa, the Middle East and Europe. His expertise spans commercial strategy, procurement, cost management, contract administration, claims management, extension of time assessments, dispute avoidance and commercial governance under international forms of contract, including FIDIC.

Pieter is a Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS), a registered Professional Quantity Surveyor (SACQSP) and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb). He holds degrees in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management and Law.

As an advocate for innovation in the built environment, Pieter's work focuses on the intersection of commercial management, professional judgement and Artificial Intelligence. He believes that while AI will fundamentally change how construction professionals work, it will never replace the critical thinking, contractual understanding and commercial reasoning required to make sound professional decisions.

Through Tekton Thrive, Pieter is developing programmes that help Quantity Surveyors, Commercial Managers, Engineers and other construction professionals build the governance, validation and decision-making skills needed to confidently lead in an AI-enabled industry.
